El ciervo herido—salta con más fuerza—
Le oí decir al Cazador—
No es sino el Éxtasis que antecede a la muerte—
¡Después el Matorral se queda inmóvil!
¡La Roca conmovida hace brotar un chorro!
¡El Acero pisoteado se alza!
¡Una mejilla está más encendida
Ahí donde la Fiebre clava!
¡El júbilo es la Cota de Malla de la Angustia—
En la que con cautela se escuda,
No sea que alguien descubra la sangre
Y exclame: «estás herido»!
A Wounded Deer—leaps highest—
I’ve heard the Hunter tell—
’Tis but the Ecstasy of death—
And then the Brake is still!
The Smitten Rock that gushes!
The trampled Steel that springs!
A Cheek is always redder
Just where the Hectic stings!
Mirth is the Mail of Anguish—
In which it Cautious Arm,
Lest anybody spy the blood
And “you’re hurt” exclaim!
